Alberto Pedro
Died: June 5, 2005
He was born in La Habana. He is a graduate of the Escuela Nacional de Teatro in the specialty of Acting. Professor of History of Universal Theater at the Faculty of Performing Arts of the Instituto Superior de Arte de la Habana.
He taught courses and master classes in dramaturgy at the Real Escuela Superior de Artes Dramáticas de Madrid, Spain; at the Universidad de Toronto, Canada; at the Sociedad Dramática de Maracaibo, Venezuela, and at the Primer Encuentro Internacional de Dramaturgos in Río de Janeiro, Brazil.
He was part of the casts of Teatro de Arte Popular and Teatro Político Bertolt Brecht, collectives that premiered his initial dramatic creations. He was a member of SGAE in 1989.
In 1987 he founded Teatro Mío together with his partner and renowned theater director Miriam Lezcano, for which he continued writing his works. Recognized and controversial, possessing an incisive, direct discourse that questions reality. An author who defines the face of Cuban Theater in the last five years of the '80s and the first half of the past '90s.
His works have been staged by "La Mateodora," from Miami, United States: "Manteca" and "Delirio habanero"; as well as by collectives formed specifically to represent some of his works such as "Manteca," which was performed in 2005 in Barcelona, Spain; and "Week-end en Bahía." In 1997, this work was premiered by French actors in Paris, France, as part of the Festival de Teatro Leído at the Centro Miguel de Cervantes where a public debate took place with the author's participation, as well as the staging of the work in Le Mans at the Festival de Avigñon, France.
