Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter, sings in Spanish and English. Puentes was born in Artemisa, Cuba, is the son of guitarist and music teacher Valentin Puentes and twin brother of Alex Cuba.
At the age of six, the brothers began performing in a children's guitar ensemble. As adults, they switched to jazz fusion styles and formed their own band, Puentes Brothers. Both later emigrated to Canada after marrying Canadian women they met while touring in the country.
The Puentes Brothers received a Juno Award nomination for Best Global Album at the 2001 Juno Awards. They separated as a band to launch solo careers in 2004, but have continued singing songs together.
As a soloist, Puentes leads the Orquesta de la Voz de Cuba, was a guest musician on José Rizo Mongorama and Jazz en Latin Side All Stars projects, and performed with Celia Cruz and Ruben Blades. At the 2014 Juno Awards, he was a pre-selected nominee for World Music Album of the Year for his album Sabor A Café.
Dicen is the singer-songwriter's most recent album and was presented in April at the National Museum of Fine Arts Theater, featuring performances by Tony Ávila and Lino Lores. This album compiles 11 songs written by Puentes, and a song titled "La rumba primero," written by his brother Alex Cuba, included on their joint album, Morumba Cubana.
The songs composed by Adonis Puentes were a summary of his experiences and artistic concerns over the past seven years. For the production of the album, the Cuban musician worked with maestro Oscar Hernández, pianist, arranger, producer and Doctor of Music, highly recognized for his work as musical director of Rubén Blades y Los Seis del Solar.
Also collaborating was Cuban percussionist Jimmy Branly, based in Los Angeles, California, one of the best musicians of his generation.
The album was recorded at Stagg Stret Studios (Los Angeles), with the participation of internationally recognized musicians.
