Among cries of "Long Live Cuba," demands for the United States to end the blockade, and a tribute to Spanish singer-songwriter Luis Eduardo Aute, Cuban trovador Silvio Rodríguez performed yesterday a concert before a massive audience at the Wizink Center in Madrid.

It was a show lasting more than two hours, with two dozen songs and more than 8,000 people, according to the EFE news agency.

It had been five years since Silvio had gone to Spain. He did so then at this same venue and also after performing at another location at more affordable prices, this time at a festival of the Communist Party of Spain in exchange for 2 euros for charitable purposes.

Singer-songwriter, guitarist and poet, Rodríguez is one of the most prominent representatives of the Nueva Trova, a movement inspired by the Cuban Revolution, a process of which he has been a firm defender. This position has gained him both allies and detractors, such as the group gathered yesterday at the gates of the Wizink Center with signs against Silvio and the Cuban government.

But inside the atmosphere was different. From among his twenty-odd albums he performed songs such as "Yo te quiero libre," "En el claro de la luna," "Quién fuera," "Canción del elegido," "Eva," "La era está pariendo un corazón," "Ángel para un final" and "Sueño con serpientes," sung in chorus by the crowd.

And in the final block he sang "Ojalá," "Tu soledad me abriga la garganta," "Playa Girón," "Pequeña serenata nocturna" and "El necio."

The proceeds from this concert will also be donated by the singer-songwriter to public health in Cuba, which is going through a serious moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic crisis.
