Cuban visual artist Alejandra Glez will present her performance "Being Born Again" on February 15th at the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, Spain.
Exclusively for Cuba Noticias 360, Alejandra Glez stated that for her "as a young Cuban artist it is a great opportunity to be at the Thyssen, both for my career and for the possibility of representing Cuban art in that museum and in this country. I believe this will change the status of my career, will position it a bit higher. I would already have a presence in one of the most important museums there is, especially here in Spain".
Through her Instagram profile, the artist thanked curator Semiramis González for making her part of her performance circuit at the Spanish museum, where she will share as part of her work with Cuban pianist Yoyi Lagarza and other musicians from the island.
Alejandra Glez's presentation will take place at 6:00 p.m. (Spain time) and will be part of the performance series Vision and Presence 2023.
"This performance follows my completely personal line. It is a project that speaks about my culture and about the religion I practice, which is the Yoruba religion. I want to show them where I come from and that's why it goes a bit about that mixture that was created between Africa and Cuba and what has come from there. Furthermore, I find it very interesting to bring all of this to a culture like Spain, since for them it is very new to witness a Yoruba religious act," the artist commented.
In its second edition, this series seeks to give visibility to women creators and includes ten unpublished actions created exclusively to be performed in different spaces of the museum throughout the entire year, according to the official website of the Thyssen Museum.
They also added that the chosen themes bring current issues to the museum that provide a new vision and mission, focused on social matters such as gender equality, historical memory, racial diversity, concern for climate change, and a reinterpretation of art history from a more equitable perspective.
Alejandra Glez, born in 1996, has maintained very personal work that is simultaneously social, and from her experience has examined topics such as panic attacks and sexual assault to create moving works of visual art.
According to the ArteInformado platform, "her objective is to explore female identity while delving into some of the most current approaches in feminist theory", using tools such as photography, collage, installation, performance, and video.
"Through part of her work, the artist also attempts to nurture the flow of the universal process that aims to normalize nudism as a peaceful exercise of self-liberation," the aforementioned publication added.
Since 2013 she has maintained arduous photographic work, training also in institutions in Cuba and Spain.
She has also presented her works in more than ten solo exhibitions and more than 30 group exhibitions, both on the island and in Spain, the U.S., Chile, Mexico, and Portugal, among others.
