Cuban boxing has a new loss. Double Olympic champion Robeisy Ramírez abandoned the Island team that was training in the Mexican city of Aguascalientes for the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla.
The sports publication cites a note from "the Cuban boxing leadership" which states that Robeisy's decision leaves seven men "who will defend the leadership" of Cuban boxing in Colombia, and "turns its back on the commitment made to the country, the delegation and his teammates."
"Attitudes like these stray from the values and discipline that characterize our sport, which remains committed to making the greatest possible contribution to the Cuban delegation in the regional event," the note adds.
Robeisy's departure, who would have represented Cuba in the 56 kg division in Barranquilla, joins that of double world champion in the 49 kg division, the Camagüeyan Joahnys Argilagos, who failed to show up for weigh-ins at the eliminatory tournament for the Central American Games held in Tijuana, Mexico.
At that event, Cuba also failed to secure qualification in the 52 kg division, as its representative, the Spiritus native Yosvani Veitía, did not pass the medical examination and did not compete.
