Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa was detained on the island following a fatal accident that caused the death of a person on December 31st, according to the Boxeo Cubano website.
"According to a source close to the situation, the Olympic champion and multiple professional titleholder was already receiving legal counsel to review his case before the prosecutor's office in that eastern province, where the incident occurred, in which Gamboa hit a pedestrian on a stretch of road with no lighting," reported El Nuevo Herald.
The source told the aforementioned outlet that the Olympic champion "was not under the influence of alcohol or any other illegal substance. Gamboa is a very religious person and does not consume alcohol or anything improper."
In this regard, Boxeo Cubano expanded on Twitter that Gamboa "the first thing he did was assist the victim who was inside the tunnel with no lighting at all and in very poor condition. It is impossible to drive through that tunnel at high speed," the source states.
The "Cyclone of Guantánamo," 41 years old, as a professional boxer, held the WBA featherweight titles between June 2009 and June 2011, and the IBF between September 2010 and March 2011, noted the newspaper AS.
In April of last year, Gamboa had his last fight, when he could not face his opponent. From the start of the first round, Mexican Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz came out to give his all in the ring, as Yuriorkis was on the verge of hitting the canvas due to the hard blows from the Mexican fighter.
Despite this, the Cuban continued trying to put up his fight against the young boxer, but it was not enough to come away with the victory.
