Cuban-Born Yulenmis Aguilar Sets Spanish Javelin Record at Mediterranean Games

Javelin thrower Yulenmis Aguilar, born in Bayamo, Cuba, set a new Spanish national record on September 1, 2026, with a throw of 65.39 meters in the final of the Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy. The mark earned her the silver medal, behind Serbia's Adriana Vilagos, who took gold with 65.93 meters.

The throw broke the previous Spanish national record of 64.07 meters, held by Mercedes Chilla since 2010, by 1.32 meters. Aguilar, who obtained Spanish citizenship in April 2024, trains in Oleiros, Galicia, under coach Raimundo Fernández, and arrived at the competition after finishing ninth at the European Championships in Birmingham with a throw of 57.06 meters.

Before representing Spain, Aguilar competed for Cuba starting in 2013, setting a junior world record of 63.86 meters at the 2015 Pan American Junior Championships in Edmonton and competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Competing for Spain, she reached the final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, finishing sixth.

The new record confirms Aguilar's strong form this season and places her among Europe's leading javelin throwers heading into upcoming international meets.
