The extraordinary Cuban singer and composer Barbara Ruiz - La Cubanísima won the Tropical Song of the Year award at the Latin Awards Canada 2020, an event dedicated to Latin culture in that country that is celebrating its sixth edition. The Cuban won with her single "Más alto que yo", a song released in 2020 to promote the album of the same name.

Third time's the charm, as the Cuban had been nominated in 2018 and 2019, in the first case as Breakthrough Artist, and in 2019 in the categories Female Singer and Tropical Song of the Year.

According to the official letter sent by the event to the Cuban singer, in 2020 Barbara Ruiz - La Cubanísima deserved three nominations: Female Artist, Tropical Song of the Year, and Album of the Year. In Cuba "Más alto que yo" did not go unnoticed and deserved a nomination in the #Pistacubana 2020 Annual Survey as Musical Production of the Year, in addition to another nomination for the album of the same name in the Album of the Year category. The piece was already mentioned by the portal in July 2020 in this way:

The Cuban essence of the proposal by Barbara Ruiz - La Cubanísima, nominated several times in Canada, is genuine, endorsed not only by lyrics that allude to our country and that bring together a luxurious salsa interpretation, only comparable with great divas of the genre, but also by the participation of Manolito Simonet in the production and Aisar Hernández in the arrangements.

The song "Más alto que yo" achieved 10 weeks in the Top100 of the portal from August to October 2020.

A dozen 2020 annual tops include the single "Más alto que yo" in their selection, such as the 2020 Top20 of Radio Latin Cuba, the annual summary of French DJs, and the annual Top40 of SalsonRadio.net, proof of the international impact of the song that validates the well-deserved award.

We highlight that the Cuban's work of dissemination and promotion spans a dozen countries in the region through radio and television programs, in addition to a sustained team of fans that supports her work in several countries. Other songs such as "Mi Son pa Cali" or "Conéctate, compay" have also had significant audience levels on international radio and streaming platforms this 2020.

Held on December 27th in Montreal, the sixth edition of the Latin Awards Canada had to take place under strict safety measures due to Covid-19, but it was a true celebration for Latin culture in Canada.

Other Cubans were winners at the event, the Grammy-award-winning Alex Cuba, who deserved the awards in the categories Singer-Songwriter Composer of the Year and Best Music Video, and musician Roberto Linares Brown who earned the award as Arranger and Producer of the Year.

With these results, Cuban music closes another year of important recognition in the international arena.
