The stellar Granma-born outfielder Yoenis Céspedes has been one of the best Cuban baseball players in the Major Leagues in history. "La Potencia" not only played for eight seasons in the world's best baseball, but also left excellent numbers in the MLB.
Céspedes left a batting average of .273 (3191-870), including 173 doubles, 24 triples and 165 home runs as extra bases, in addition to 475 runs scored and 528 RBIs, with an offensive line of .327/.497/.824 (OBP/SLG/OPS). Similarly, he struck out in 742 opportunities and received 240 walks, with 43 stolen bases in 63 attempts, for an effectiveness of 68%.
And we refer to his performance in past and conclusive tense, because although he has not yet retired from professional baseball, Céspedes has not played in an organized manner since 2020 and the possibility of his return to the Major Leagues seems increasingly distant each day.
In fact, the rumors that have gained strength in recent times are about the possibility that Céspedes returns to play in the National Baseball Series with his Alazanes de Granma team, current national champions, with which "La Potencia" already participated in eight seasons before signing in 2012 with the Oakland Athletics in the Majors. In that stint, Céspedes batted .319 average, with 169 home runs and 557 RBIs.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 27, sources from Swing Completo sent us this photo of "La Potencia" training in his native Campechuela, a municipality in the eastern Cuban province of Granma, alongside veteran Alazanes pitcher Leandro Martínez and Abigail Escalona. The same sources reported that last week, Céspedes was training for at least six days at a very intense pace, as if he were preparing to return to active baseball.
