Former Cuban Major League Baseball outfielder Yasiel Puig Valdés is scheduled to appear before a federal judge in Los Angeles on May 26, 2026, for sentencing, following a federal jury's guilty verdict in February of that year.
Puig was found guilty of obstruction of justice and making false statements to federal agents during an investigation into an illegal sports betting operation run by former minor leaguer Wayne Nix, who operated a clandestine gambling business out of California.
Federal prosecutors are seeking a sentence of 18 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $55,200. Puig's defense attorney, Keri Curtis Axel, argued against a custodial sentence, stating that Puig is a first-time offender who has already endured significant reputational harm and the effective end of his professional career.
The investigation stemmed from an informal interview federal agents conducted with Puig in January 2022, during which he allegedly denied knowing about the nature of his bets and the circumstances of paying his gambling debts. The bets — totaling more than $280,000 in losses — were placed in 2019 through websites controlled by Nix's operation.
Puig, born in Cienfuegos in 1990, was one of the most prominent Cuban players in recent Major League Baseball history. He played primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, and Cleveland Indians. After leaving U.S. professional baseball, he had stints in leagues in Mexico and South Korea.
