The young Cuban actress Yany Prado displayed talent, perseverance and acting skill in Sky Rojo, the now-finished Netflix series that delivered high doses of adrenaline in every chapter.
Yany is part of the trio of protagonists, three women who, forced and pursued by their past, undertake a flight from the luxury brothel where they work to escape their pimp. They know they will be hunted down to be killed and they only have two options: escape, or stand up to their pursuers.
With this strong plot, the challenge for the Cuban was bringing to life Gina, a character with whom she finally conquered Netflix and audience expectations.
Gina was a role that required great doses of attention and concentration for the Cuban actress, with great emotional weight and which required much study, she recently confessed.
Yany Prado was born in Cuba in 1991 but at just 11 years old emigrated to Mexico, where she had the fortune of training as an actress at the Televisa school. In 2010 she arrived on television with a role in La Rosa de Guadalupe and later was part of the cast of La doble vida de Estela Carrillo (2017), Tres Milagros (2018) and La reina soy yo (2019).
Later, she moved to Spain and on more than one occasion has assured her interviewers that even Hollywood "doesn't stop." In 2019 the artist revealed what acting meant to her, in a dialogue with the international media outlet Debate:
"Acting is for me freedom, being able to bring out the problems we have in society, acting gives you the freedom to dare to do what people would never think you would do, you do that in acting, it gives you the opportunity to become chameleon-like."
After her performance in Sky Rojo, the Cuban now has ahead of her a new range of possibilities for which she is preparing, according to what she said in an interview for Milenio.
In that line came her participation in the Zorro series, premiered just days ago on Amazon Prime Video and where she plays Doctor Kohl in four episodes. Yany described her character as "a mysterious woman and faithful to justice, with scientific abilities advanced for her time," in a recent Instagram post.
"For me everything changes, even if it's small everything is valuable, as long as it contributes to that totality we want to seek: that the difference of color, nationality, social class no longer be seen, that it is understood that the merit of hard work every day is a value," she explained to Milenio about the new opportunities that are coming for Latinas in the world of acting and about the importance of each role she plays.
In the new series, which boasts a luxury cast starting with Spaniard Miguel Bernardeau recognized in Cuba for his role in the Élite installments to veteran Rodolfo Sancho, the Cuban not only embodies the role of the doctor's assistant. As the plot develops, her small character acquires greater visibility as she is discovered to be an anonymous collaborator of the local newspaper, delivering her stories mysteriously to the editorial office and signing them under a masculine name. She finally becomes an important ally of Zorro to carry out a mission of "life or death."
In her opinion, the search for opportunities for Latin American actors and narratives in the international industry remains a complex issue, but she considers that there are currently more possibilities. If not, she would not have had a place in Sky Rojo, nor would other Latinos be succeeding in various locations.
Regarding her acting preferences and roles, the Cuban has made clear that, in general, she likes all branches of acting, both theater and cinema as well as series and novels. On the other hand, for her it is vital to feel a connection with the character she plays.
In this way, through talent and dedication, the Cuban appears on screens in more than 190 countries currently thanks to Netflix and Prime Video, platforms where we will surely continue to see her in new projects and roles.
