Florida International University (FIU) will present an honorary Doctor of Music degree to Cuban singer and songwriter Willy Chirino during its spring 2026 commencement ceremonies, taking place April 26–30 at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center on the university's Modesto Maidique Campus in Miami.
The honorary degree will be conferred during the Monday afternoon ceremony, honoring Chirino's more than five decades of artistic achievement. The pioneering Cuban-American musician received the 2014 Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and is widely recognized as one of the creators of the Miami Sound — a distinctive fusion of Cuban rhythms, rock, jazz, and Caribbean influences.
Born Wilfredo José Chirino Rodríguez on April 5, 1947, in Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, Cuba, Chirino arrived in Miami as a child through Operation Peter Pan, the historic exodus of Cuban minors to the United States between 1960 and 1962. He began his professional career in the 1970s and went on to build one of the most celebrated discographies in Latin music.
Over the course of his career, Chirino recorded more than 20 albums and composed hundreds of songs that have been covered by artists including Celia Cruz, Óscar D'León, the Gipsy Kings, and Raphael. He founded his own record label, Latinum Music, in 1997. His most iconic works include Nuestro Día (Ya Viene Llegando), Soy Guajiro, Oxígeno, and La Noche Perfecta.
FIU will celebrate the graduation of nearly 6,000 students across the multi-day ceremony schedule. The university's recognition of Chirino underscores his lasting cultural impact on Miami and the broader Cuban-American community, and adds another milestone to an already storied career.
