Poet Virgilio López Lemus has been recognized with the Samuel Feijóo Prize for Poetry on the Environment 2020, awarded annually by the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, to recognize the life's work of a Cuban poet who has reflected environmental themes in his verses.
In the opinion of the jury —composed of María Dolores Ortiz, María Elena Llana and Marta Lesmes— this award is granted considering that in López Lemus's work "concern for nature and the sociocultural environment constitute a heritage of national, Latin American and universal identity," reported that entity in a press release.
A Doctor in Philological Sciences, and in addition to being a poet, researcher, essayist, critic, professor and translator, Virgilio López Lemus, born in Fomento, Sancti Spíritus in 1946, is the author of almost fifty books and has been recognized, among other awards, with the Carlos J. Finlay Order, the Distinction For National Culture and the condition of Academic Merit of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.
The Samuel Feijóo Prize for Poetry on the Environment has been awarded since 2007 and, to date, it has been received by Roberto Manzano Díaz, Dulcila Cañizares, Alex Pausides, Jesús David Curbelo, Alpidio Alonso-Grau, Waldo Leyva Portal, Ricardo Riverón Rojas, Renael González Batista, Rolando López del Amo, Pedro Péglez González and Carmen Serrano Coello.
The presentation to Virgilio López Lemus of the Samuel Feijóo Prize for Poetry on the Environment 2020 will take place in January of the coming year, during the celebration of the General Meeting of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País.
