Everyone Wants to Come to Gibara for the Poor Film Festival

June 25, 2018

The White Villa of the Crabs stands out as the most interesting proposal to kick off Summer 2018, with the realization of the International Film Festival.

The 14th Edition of the attractive event, dedicated to children and adolescents, will take place between July 1st and 7th of next month.

Jorge Perugorría-"Pichi"-, president of the Festival, announced as special guests actor and director Benicio del Toro, who returns to this event to participate in a tribute to the 20 years of the film "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", which he co-starred in alongside Johnny Depp. To him is added Félix Viscarret, a prestigious Spanish actor and director whose work includes the creation of the series "Four Seasons in Havana"

On the musical front, the presence of Pancho Céspedes has become almost habitual, returning once again to give us those nights under his authentic seal. For his part, Silvio Rodríguez will be in charge of performing the opening concert, and for the closing, Fito Paéz and Elaín Pérez will be the ones to bid farewell to the upcoming event.

This year the "Lucía" Awards will be presented to three "institutions" of Cuban culture: film director Enrique Pineda Barnet, and actors Salvador Word and Mirtha Ibarra.

"As a novel element of the 14th Edition, we will carry out a joint activity with the Antonio Núñez-Jiménez Foundation to clean the beach that is close to the "El güirito" community -in the Villa Blanca itself-, all this as a way to encourage the necessary environmental awareness for the future", Pichi stressed.

The musical evenings promise to defy the early morning hours when the project by Suylín Milanés is inserted, which includes DJs to "spin" songs after the concerts conclude.

Sergio Benvenuto Solás, member of the Organizing Committee of the event, explained that the upcoming edition coincides with the 10th anniversary of the physical disappearance of Humberto Solás –creator of the Festival- for this reason several activities dedicated to this figure will be held, but not only limiting the tribute to the personality of the notable creator, but also to Tomás Gutiérrez Alea-Titón-, and to Cuban cinema in general.

"On this occasion a culinary event is inserted within the framework of the Festival, as well as a workshop dedicated to children together with the Uneac, to which the project of child creators 'Voices of Audiovisual' will be added, because of this the UNICEF will also hold an exhibition dedicated to this audience", Benvenuto added.

René de la Cruz, artistic director of the Festival, highlighted the premiere, in the scenic section, of the work "Smoke", written by Yunior García and starring Félix Beatón and Renecito himself. As the upcoming edition will revolve around the younger audience, among the activities dedicated to children and adolescents, the participation of singer-songwriter Lidis Lamorú stands out.

The afternoon was conducive for Perugorría to further emphasize the blend between the charm of the northeastern city and the impact of the event at the national and international level in the interest to attend each event: "The Festival is Gibara's main ally in the tourism sector, its realization generates great expectation and every year we have a constant discussion because everyone wants to come".
