The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba presented this Wednesday in Havana the recognition award for Lifetime Achievement to researcher Jesús Gómez Cairo, for the rescue and dissemination of our country's musical heritage.
Cuban musicology is enhanced by a figure whose work has been dedicated to safeguarding our musical heritage, to research and education. Our tribute to the master and his prolific trajectory with this award, the association that brings together the country's artistic vanguard referred via Twitter.
The 2018 National Music Prize winner also directed the Center for Information and Musical Documentation "Odilio Urfé", the country's first institution in charge of national musical preservation, and since 1998 has served as director of the National Museum of Music and Vice President of the Cuban Institute of Music (ICM).
A scholar of the national musical scale and its most exalted figures, Gómez Cairo's work comprises books, essays and other publications that highlight the creations of Ernesto Lecuona, Benny Moré and Leo Brouwer; while he has emphasized the legacy of Alejo Carpentier on repeated occasions, and received the "Razón de Ser" Prize awarded by the Foundation bearing the name of the eminent Cuban writer.
Held at the Villena hall, the ceremony to honor Gómez Cairo took place on the Day of Culture Workers which, in Cuba, is celebrated every December 14 in remembrance of the birthday of Raúl Gómez García, one of the attackers of the Moncada barracks under the orders of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fide
