Johannes García Receives 2020 National Dance Prize in Cuba

Cuban master Johannes García receives the 2020 National Dance Prize, awarded by the National Council of the Performing Arts, in recognition of his professional work.

A jury presided over by choreographer Alberto Méndez took into account the prosperous career of the artist that began with the National Folk Ensemble of Cuba, and highlighted his work in other relevant companies in the world of dance in his country, such as the Maraguán Student Ensemble.

Furthermore, this disciple of Alberto Alonso and Santiago Alfonso founded his own professional group in 1992, the Company of Folk and Popular Dances of Cuba JJ.

García has spent more than 20 years as artistic director and choreographer of the comparsa of the University Student Federation of this capital and has served in different positions linked to his profession.

For his achievements, the master has received different distinctions and awards, such as the Order for National Culture of Cuba, the Lira Order of the Ministry of Culture of Bulgaria, and the Gitana Tropical of the City of La Habana.

The National Dance Prize, established in 1998, is the highest award conferred by the National Council of the Performing Arts of Cuba, for lifetime achievement.

The cultural gala where the award will be presented will take place at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso, under the artistic direction of Alberto Méndez.
