The choreography "Mundo Interpretado", by Brazilian Juliano Nunes and danced by Acosta Danza, has been distinguished with the Villanueva Prize for Criticism as one of the best scenic shows presented in Cuba in the 2020 - 2021 period.
The award was decided by Members of the Criticism and Research Section of the Scenic Arts, belonging to the Association of Scenic Artists of the Uneac.
"Mundo Interpretado" had its world premiere on January 24, 2020 at the Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso during Acosta Danza's "Cuerpos" Season. It features original music by Pepe Gavilondo, lighting designed by Pedro Benítez and costumes and sets by visual artist Glenda León.
Along with "Mundo Interpretado", the dance shows "Séptima Sinfonía", by Uwe Scholz with the Ballet Nacional de Cuba and "Cascanueces", choreography by Osnel Delgado with Malpaso, were also distinguished. As well as the theatrical works "Reportaje Macbeth", directed by Raúl Martín with Teatro de la Luna; "Ubú sin cuernos", directed by Miguel Abreu with Ludi Teatro; "Luz", directed by Osvaldo Doimeadiós with Oficio de Isla. The Villanueva Prizes for the best shows of the period will be presented in the month of March, in the context of celebrations for International Theatre Day.
On the international front, the Cuban company Acosta Danza is nominated, in the Outstanding Achievement in Dance category, for the Laurence Olivier Awards, the most prestigious recognition of the scenic arts in the United Kingdom.
The group directed by Carlos Acosta was selected for the choreography De punta a cabo, a recreation based on the original by Alexis Fernández (Maca).
The aforementioned production is part of the 100% Cuban show that Acosta Danza presented at the Sadler's Wells Theatre in London last February. In this same category are nominated the dancers of the Nederlands Dans Theater, choreographer Arielle Smith and dancer Edward Watson.
The Laurence Olivier Awards are organized by the Society of London Theatres, are presented annually and their categories span plays, dance, opera and musical performances. The winners of this edition will be announced on April 10, at a ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
