The Texas Rangers announced this Friday that they have acquired Cuban left-hander Aroldis Chapman from the Kansas City Royals. The transaction included a trade for Cole Ragans and prospect Roni Cabrera, who will return to the Royals.
The move, predictable in Aroldis Chapman's case, brings Texas one of the best relievers available this summer, according to MLB Trade Rumors.
Previously, Aroldis Chapman acknowledged the broad possibilities of being traded by Kansas City. In a conversation with ESPN, the Cuban left-hander said he was ready to join a new team before the end of the trade deadline.
On whether he is ready or not, Chapman told Enrique Rojas that "no, prepared no, but I am aware that when I came to this organization (those) were the plans and objectives. And nothing, just, I'm trying to focus more on the work, on what I'm doing," cited by the outlet Al Bat.
The Missile averages a higher velocity on his fastball, compared to what was seen last year with the Yankees, and his strikeout rate of 40.9% places him above the league average.
Thus, the Rangers bet on a recovered Aroldis Chapman to strengthen their bullpen and secure the late-game innings. Texas this year is serious and seems intent on fortifying its team heading into the postseason.
