A tribute to the famous Cuban singer Celia Cruz opened the awards ceremony for the ninth edition of the Platino Awards, the most important accolades for Iberoamerican cinema, which were held last Sunday in Spain.
The tribute to the so-called "Guarachera of Cuba" was performed by Spanish singer Nia, who performed the song La vida es un carnaval, along with a group of dancers, according to several media outlets.
At the ceremony, the biggest winning film was El buen patrón. The film obtained four awards: Best Iberoamerican Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay for Fernando León, and Best Male Performance in Film for Javier Bardem.
For its part, El reino was recognized as Best Iberoamerican Series, and it earned the award for Claudia Piñeiro and Marcelo Piñeyro as Best Creators.
At the event, a Platino Award of Honor was given to actress Carmen Maura, 76 years old, for her entire career.
Apart from the emotional tribute to Celia Cruz, Cuba was also present at the Awards with the participation of filmmaker Pavel Grioud and actress María Isabel Díaz Lago, both residents in Spain, where they have continued their film careers.
Giroud (Havana, 1972) has also successfully ventured into literature, being one of the nominees for the 2022 Azorín Novel Prize for his book Habana Nostra.
Organized by the Provincial Council of Alicante and Grupo Planeta, the Azorín Prize was won by Madrid writer María Zaragoza with the novel "La biblioteca de fuego".
