The Academy of Sciences of Cuba (ACC) congratulated its Academician of Merit, Doctor Hugo Pérez Rojas, for having obtained the Spirit of Salam 2023 award.
This recognition constitutes a well-deserved honor for Pérez Rojas, a scientist who has dedicated his life to the study of Theoretical Physics, and also for the ACC, affirmed Doctor of Physical-Mathematical Sciences Lilliam Álvarez Díaz, secretary of the institution.
She recalled that the award recipient is Principal Researcher at the Institute of Cybernetics, Mathematics and Physics, a center where he founded the Department of Theoretical Physics.
The award was also presented to scientists Federico Rosei, from Italy; and Tino Nyawelo, from South Sudan.
Spirit of Salam is an award granted annually in honor of Mohammad Abdus Salam (1926-1996), Pakistani theoretical physicist who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1979 for his work on the electroweak model, a mathematical and conceptual synthesis of electromagnetism and the weak nuclear force.
The International Center for Theoretical Physics that bears his name is sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization; the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Italian government.
