The distinguished Cuban actor Jorge Martínez has been the worthy recipient in 2019 of the Enrique Almirante Prize for lifetime achievement.
The artist emotionally confesses his immense admiration for the late master acting teacher Enrique Almirante, who not only honored professional excellence during his lifetime, but who now, through the evocation of his figure and commendable artistic legacy, continues to elevate the craft of acting in our country.
To this honor granted by the Caricatos Agency is added the recognition from that institution in 2009 to Martínez for best male performance in the drama Pasos hacia la montaña. In an exclusive interview with the Cuban TV Portal, the actor assures us he feels "very honored by all these recognitions."
In a special way, he emphasizes that the Enrique Almirante Prize holds for him "a special connotation, because it carries the name of that teacher, friend and person who never thought highly of himself, who humbly shared his knowledge with new generations of actors." Martínez comments that he keeps the aforementioned prize in his room and always looks at it, as it constitutes a reason for admiration and respect for an unforgettable actor.
Jorge's successful acting career on television includes unforgettable novels, among which are Las honradas, Destino prohibido, Encuentro, Latidos compartidos (for his performance in this drama he obtained the award for most popular actor in the country). Likewise, he has participated in teleplays and series such as Tras la huella and Su propia guerra. This prolific artist has also hosted music programs such as A moverse, El Expreso and Sonando en Cuba, in addition to variety programs and special galas.
Film is not unfamiliar to him, as he has acted in 12 films. Among these, there are two that the public does not forget, La bella del Alhambra and, most recently, Últimos días en La Habana, which obtained international awards such as best actor at the Havana Films of New York, in 2017, and in the same category at the Gibara Film Festival for Poor Cinema, in 2018.
