Cuban journalist Alejandro Condis won the prestigious Emmy Awards for "Best Live Reporter" for his coverage of a demonstration by exiled Cubans against the Cuban government, which he conducted about six months ago for Telemundo Las Vegas.
The recognition is awarded by the National Academy of Television, Arts and Sciences in the United States and this year the winners were announced through a virtual ceremony.
"I won my first Emmy award! Best Live Reporter! I am excited and grateful, because this recognition, the highest honor awarded in the TV world, has made me reflect," Condis wrote on his Facebook profile.
The young Cuban, who graduated in Havana with a degree in Art History, recalled when "I arrived [in the U.S.] with just a backpack about six years ago, with almost nothing on me, after crossing the border from Mexico."
He reflected on his own experience as a migrant until now, "a time of great challenges, enormous efforts, intense work and struggle against everything to achieve a dream."
Alejandro Condis said that he is "a Cuban from a humble and poor neighborhood in Havana; a child who grew up afraid to speak in public for fear of being discriminated against, but who decided to raise his voice as others do today and overcome all fear."
The young man wrote that he always wanted to be a journalist. Condis has been fulfilling his dream since he started as an occasional commentator on television programs. He later became a producer and later managed to become a host and reporter, an effort that has now been rewarded with the most important distinction in television in the U.S. and perhaps the world.
"I know we are living through difficult times because of the coronavirus pandemic (...), but despite everything we must enjoy the joys and continue living our lives as intensely as possible. Today I have the love of many friends I have made along the way and of the viewers who honor me every day with their support and affection," he said.
I WON MY FIRST EMMY AWARD!
I WON MY FIRST EMMY AWARD! Best Live Reporter! I am excited and grateful, because this recognition, the highest honor awarded in the TV world, has made me reflect… since I arrived with just a backpack about 6 years ago, with almost nothing on me, after crossing the border from Mexico, until today. It has been a time of great challenges, enormous efforts, intense work and struggle against everything to achieve a dream. I am a Cuban from a humble and poor neighborhood in Havana; a child who grew up afraid to speak in public for fear of being discriminated against, but who decided to raise his voice as others do today and overcome all fear; a graduate in Art History who wanted to be a journalist; a Hispanic who struggled to learn English; a young man who started from the bottom as an occasional commentator on TV programs and became a producer and later a host and reporter… but although perhaps I had everything to fail, I decided to venture out, fight and try to be successful. I know we are living through difficult times because of the coronavirus pandemic (in fact, this awards gala had to be held completely virtually), but despite everything we must enjoy the joys and continue living our lives as intensely as possible. Today I have the love of many friends I have made along the way and viewers who honor me every day with their support and affection and, of course, an Emmy award. Thanks to the Pacific Southwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, to my bosses, my producers, my colleagues at Telemundo Las Vegas, my friends, my family and to everyone who made it possible that a day like today could happen, because without the trust, opportunities and support they have given me I would not have become even a third of what I am now. Believe me more than ever: nothing is impossible.
