The goalkeeper for the Portuguese handball national team Alfredo Quintana, of Cuban origin, has been hospitalized following a cardiorespiratory arrest during a training session last Monday, announced by his club FC Porto.
"He was immediately assisted by an emergency medical team. Once his condition stabilized, he was transferred and then admitted to Sao Joao hospital in Porto," said FC Porto in a brief statement. "FC Porto will provide new information about his clinical situation as soon as it has it," added the club where Quintana has been playing since 2010.
At 32 years old and Cuban by birth, Quintana participated in the 2021 World Championship in Egypt in January, where Portugal finished in tenth place. Portugal will face France, Croatia and Tunisia from March 12 to 14 in Montpellier in the Olympic qualifying tournament for the Tokyo Games.
