Pitcher Lázaro Blanco Matos, who was supposed to travel this Friday from the United States to Mexico, did not relocate to the nation to fulfill his contract with the Saraperos del Saltillo team and decided to remain in U.S. territory.
After participating in the Pre-Olympic Games of the Americas, Blanco along with Carlos Juan Viera were supposed to fly Friday directly from the United States to Mexico to join the Saraperos in the Mexican Baseball League. But he did not show up at check-in at the airport and informed the flight attendant that he would not return to Cuba or play in Mexico.
Blanco turned out to be the third member of the team that participated in the Pre-Olympic Games to abandon the delegation. He was preceded by shortstop César Prieto and team psychologist Jorge Figueroa. The 33-year-old Figueroa did not show up to take the flight on Thursday and is currently whereabouts unknown. And César Prieto abandoned the team the same day he arrived in South Florida.
Blanco was in charge of opening for the island in the Pre-Olympic Games of the Americas, where the national team was eliminated after losing in the first two matches against Venezuela and Canada.
