On October 9th, the series La máquina will debut on the Hulu streaming platform, the first original Spanish-language production from that service, one of the most famous worldwide. In this six-episode material, all filmed in Mexico and starring the celebrated Gael García Bernal, Cuban Jorge Perugorría acts, playing Sixto, a trainer from the Cuban boxing school who will shape the performance of the main character in the ring.

The plot centers on the figure of Esteban "La máquina" Osuna, a washed-up boxer, whose manager Andy Luján, played by Diego Luna, gets him a fight that could give a final turn to his career. At the same time, a criminal organization will seek to have the athlete lose the fight, while the athlete must decide whether to bet on winning or protecting his family, which will be threatened by the gangsters.

This audiovisual, which will also be available on Disney+ and whose cast also included Eiza González, Andrés Delgado, Karina Gidi, Dariam Coco and Lucía Méndez, finished filming in late 2022 and was under the production of Searchlight Television, Gael García Bernal and La Corriente del Golfo. Marco Ramírez (Daredevil, The Defenders, Orange Is the New Black) served as executive producer and showrunner, and the episodes were directed by Mexican filmmaker Gabriel Ripstein.

According to Infobea, Sixto, a personality of Cuban boxing, "is a man from a simpler era, wise enough to see through the greed that he believes has taken over the sport to which he has dedicated his life."

Upon finishing filming, almost two years ago, Cuban Perugorría declared to the newspaper El Universal that in this fiction he will be like a father to Osuna and Luján.

"When Gael called me and told me he was going to start the project and wanted me to be part of it, I said: 'how could I not be?', I'm a fan of that sport, and as a Cuban I've been linked to boxing my whole life; it was one of those things you do because you enjoy it and you get to know a little more," declared the Havana-born actor.

"He had wanted to play a boxer for a while and Diego had already directed a documentary about Chávez (Julio César, world champion boxer), so everyone was in that mode and I just showed up," concluded the protagonist of the acclaimed Strawberry and Chocolate.

In recent years, the man born on August 13, 1965 has participated in other foreign works such as Doctor Portuondo, premiered on Filmin in 2021, and Las noches de Tefía, produced by Atresmedia and released in 2023.
