On her Facebook wall, Cuban singer Haydeé Milanés, daughter of Pablo Milanés, expressed:
Yesterday I was with my husband Alejandro Gutiérrez at Prado, in support of the LGBT community.
We went to support a space that this community had held for several years and that suddenly, shamefully, without reason, they inform them that this year the parade won't happen.
It seems to me like a game with the community, that after proposing equal marriage in the new constitution, with article 68, which in the end was not approved… and now, they're also taking away the parade. I believe the community should not allow this space to be taken from them, that's why we went.
We got as far as Malecón and Prado and there was everything set up from plainclothes police, uniformed police, patrol cars, trucks on the sides, etc., very few civilized people, the majority with the worst manners, quite lacking in respect and dismissive toward the community; they were barbarians mistreating people who were mostly students, designers, artists, professionals, actors, in short, people who came in the spirit of love and peace, simply defending a space that belongs to them, with slogans like: Diverse Cuba, or Yes We Could!
All the mistreatment received by these people who were there to stop the march, who carried homophobia represented on their faces, triggered what we see today in all the photos circulating on social media.
Truly depressing, truly sad. Particularly, I was struck by the image of biologist Ariel Ruiz Urqueola, whom I met yesterday, and who surprised me with his intelligence, his brilliance. They took him away.
It is our right as civilians to march as a group of people peacefully, defending love, diversity, respect. If this march was paid for by someone, or had some purpose other than defending a space for the LGBT community, for inclusion, for love, for respect; present the evidence and show it now!! Please, respect the LGBT community, respect Cubans!!!
