Pope Names Archbishop of Havana Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez as Cardinal

Pope Francis announced this Sunday that on October 5th there will be a Consistory for the creation of cardinals at the Vatican and announced the names of the 13 new cardinals, among whom is the Archbishop of Havana Monsignor Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez.

The announcement was made by the Pontiff at the end of the Angelus prayer on this September 1st.

Specifically, it is about 10 new cardinal electors in a future Conclave and 3 more prelates who will be members of the College of Cardinals, but who for reasons of age, would not vote in the next Conclave for the election of the Supreme Pontiff.

The names of the new cardinal electors in a future Conclave that Pope Francis announced are:

Mons. Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, President of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, (67 years old, Spain).
Mons. José Tolentino Mendoça, Librarian of the Holy Roman Church, (53 years old, Portugal).
Mons. Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo, Archbishop of Jakarta (69 years old, Indonesia).
Mons. Juan de la Caridad García Rodríguez, Archbishop of San Cristóbal de La Habana (71 years old, Cuba).
Mons. Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, O.F.M. Cap, Archbishop of Kinshasa (59 years old, Democratic Republic of the Congo).
Mons. Jean-Claude Höllerich, S.J., Archbishop of Luxembourg (61 years old).
Mons. Alvaro L. Ramazzini Imeri, Bishop of Huehuetenango (72 years old, Guatemala).
Mons. Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna (63 years old, Italy).
Mons. Cristóbal López Romero, S.D.B., Archbishop of Rabat (67 years old, Morocco).
Fr. Michael Czerny, S.J., Undersecretary of the Migrants Section of the Dicastery for the Service of Integral Human Development, (73 years old, Czech Republic-Canada).

Furthermore, the Pontiff chose two archbishops and one bishop over 80 years old and therefore non-elector cardinals, for "their service to the Church" and they are: Mons. Michael Louis Fitzgerald, Archbishop Emeritus of Nepte (82 years old, Tunisia); Mons. Sigitas Tamkevicius, S.J., Archbishop Emeritus of Kaunas (80 years old, Lithuania) and Mons. Eugenio dal Corso, P.S.D.P., Bishop Emeritus of Benguela (80 years old, Angola).

"Let us pray for the new cardinals, so that, confirming their adhesion to Christ, they may help me in my ministry as Bishop of Rome for the good of all the holy faithful people of God," exhorted the Pope.
