The director of the National Institute for Research on Tropical Root and Tuber Crops (Inivit), in Santo Domingo, Dr. Sergio Rodríguez Morales, received this Thursday the title of Doctor Honoris Causa in Agronomy, granted by the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas, within the framework of activities commemorating the 67th anniversary of the founding of that educational institution.
The title —which that institution of higher learning awards to outstanding academic figures in economic and social life— is backed by his research on the cultivation of tropical roots and tubers, with emphasis on cassava, as well as international recognition and recognition from Cuban scientific institutions.
The important distinction was presented by Dr. Osana Molerio Pérez, rector of the Universidad villaclareña, who praised the merit of the native of Guayos from the province of Espíritu Santo, who studied at that center, where he is Associate Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, tutor and member of scientific review boards.
The ceremony highlighted the role of Rodríguez Morales within the National Group for Urban Agriculture and in providing advisory services to the 90 by 90 Productive Movement of Camajuaní, with a view to generalizing the results of Inivit, an institution he has directed since 1991, dedicated to obtaining varieties of clones resistant to climate change, and his more than 120 articles published in national and foreign journals.
