Distinguished Cuban essayist Ambrosio Fornet passed away this Tuesday at the age of 89, according to a post on Twitter by the president of Casa de las Américas, Abel Prieto.
"The great essayist Ambrosio Fornet has passed away. Always generous, always sharp, always helping young people, always close to our Casa de las Américas, his absence leaves us in profound pain. His widow, his children and grandchildren, his friends, please receive a very strong embrace," Prieto wrote on the social network.
Fornet developed a prestigious career as a writer, essayist, researcher, film screenwriter, and editor.
Regarding his death, the Cuban President also expressed on Twitter: "A great intellectual has died, rooted in Bayamo and with universal reach, a profound, sensitive, visceral essayist, most Cuban. Over gray years, he placed lights that survive him."

In 2002 he received the National Publishing Prize and the National Literature Prize in 2009, and was also awarded important distinctions such as For National Culture.
