The man from Pinar was one of the best catchers in the entire history of Cuban baseball, and in particular shone for his defense behind home plate.

Juan Castro García, who was a catcher for the Pinar del Río and Cuban baseball teams and a glory of this sport on the Island, passed away this Sunday in Havana at the age of 66, a victim of cancer.

A native of the San Cristóbal municipality, today in the province of Artemisa, Juan Castro stood out for his home plate defense.

He was one of the best in that aspect not only in his time, but in the entire history of Cuban baseball. Behind home plate, he performed with the Pinar del Río teams from the 1970s until the late 1980s.

The National Olympic Committee has expressed on social media: "We regret the death of that great catcher Juan Castro García, star of our #baseball. The pages contributed by him will always accompany the sports movement of the Island. May the relatives and friends receive the message of solidarity from the Cuban Olympic Committee," wrote for his part the president of that institution Roberto León Richards.
