For the work developed in research on Giardia infection in humans, the medical ranking of world experts EXPERTSCAPE placed Cuban doctor Ángel Arturo Escobedo Carbonell in the first position in the world in Giardiasis.
EXPERTSCAPE is the most extensive biomedical search engine with objective information for patients, professionals and hospitals in more than 27 thousand topics.
It bases its ranking on the number of investigations published in medical journals of international scope and on the degree of influence of the researcher in the scientific community to which he belongs.
Escobedo Carbonell, Master's in Epidemiology and head of the department of Hospital Epidemiology at the Institute of Gastroenterology, in the capital, has dedicated himself to research in Clinical Parasitology and within it to the study of giardiasis since 1997.
Likewise, the Cuban expert has conducted inquiries into the clinical picture, risk factors and diagnostic processes and treatment search related to said disease in children and adults.
The renowned scientist has also worked on the design of the best procedures that today serve for the development of international guidelines for this intestinal parasitosis, one of the most common parasitic diarrheal diseases that affect human beings.
In exclusive interviews with the Cuban News Agency, Escobedo Carbonell clarified that infection occurs through ingestion of water or food contaminated with the stage of infectious cyst resistant to the environment, or through contact between people or from person to animal with feces positive for cysts.
Water transmission is the main route of spread of Giardiasis, emphasized the Clinical Parasitologist.
He pointed out that the United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) and the World Health Organization classify Giardia as the eleventh most important parasite in the world transmitted by food.
Regarding the prevalence of giardiasis, he noted that it is higher in children under five years of age, as well as adults aged 30 to 40 years are at risk, and men who have sex with men, among others.
Ángel Arturo Escobedo Carbonell possesses the Eduardo Gotuzzo Medal, awarded by the Pan American Association of Infectology, for scientific merit in research in Latin America.
Associated editor of the international medical journal "British Medical Journal Paediatrics open", the expert has numerous scientific publications in prestigious international medical journals, as well as chapters of textbooks from the country and other countries.
