Lázaro Martínez won the first title up for grabs at the World Indoor Athletics Championship in Belgrade, Serbia, by winning the men's triple jump competition and becoming the new season leader in the process.

From his initial jump at the Stark Arena, the athlete from Guantánamo secured first place, as his efforts took him to a distance of 17.64 meters, which ultimately proved insurmountable for the rest of his rivals.

With this excellent mark, Martínez became the third best Cuban in world indoor track competitions, behind Aliecer Urrutia (17.83 m) and Yoandri Betanzos with (17.69 m).

The reigning Olympic champion, Pedro Pablo Pichardo, who had to withdraw early due to an ankle injury, took the silver medal thanks to a mark of 17.46 meters.

Finally, Donald Scott, from the United States, anchored in third place with a jump of 17.21 m.
