Marilyn Solaya will participate in an international film festival in Bilbao

With a documentary about the role of women in Cuban citizenship and a photographic exhibition with a feminist theme, the Cuban project "Todas Producciones" will participate in the XI International Invisible Film Festival Sozialak Bilbao 2019.

Filmmaker Marilyn Solaya, head of the project, announced this participation where she will present her documentary film "En Busca de un espacio" which tells the stories of Cuban women who made significant contributions to laws regarding the administration of their assets, divorce, abortion, and women's suffrage.

This production is a preview of an audiovisual project that Solaya has been working on for years with the feminist group TODAS, which also promotes artist and researcher tours, workshops, and the creation of a website.

The main premise of the film, commented the filmmaker, "is to connect the past with the present and reflect that constant struggle of each woman to occupy a dignified place in all social spheres".

The filmmaker's work, informs CubaSí, has the advisory of historian Julio César González, author of the book "En busca de un espacio, Historia de mujeres en Cuba" published in 2003.

Furthermore, the work has contributions from renowned academics such as Norma Vasallo, Yamila González, Gisela Arandia, and Daysi Rubiera.

The documentary also records the support of the mentioned festival and the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, as well as the Norwegian Fund for Cuban Cinema, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, and Rueda Producciones.

Regarding the photographic exhibition, Solaya commented that it addresses the theme of women's suffrage sharing the name of the audiovisual production; its curation is in charge of historian Neida Peñalver Díaz, member of the Ibero-American and African Network of Masculinities (Riam).

The Festival will be held from October 17-24 at the Azkura Zentroa cultural center in Bilbao, Spain and 70 works are expected to be screened, of which 30 are directed by women.
