Cuban actress María Isabel Díaz Lago will be one of the protagonists of a new project from the streaming platform Netflix, the comedy series 'Smiley'.
Díaz Lago is fondly remembered by the Island's audience for her iconic role in the cinematographic classic Una Novia Para David, and now she manages to catapult herself into the international market with this new series.
Through her social media, Díaz announced the project, and thanked for the opportunity to be part of it, celebrating what was achieved on set.
"Very eager to see it and enjoy it. One of the most beautiful trips I've experienced lately. Thank you, colleagues! Thank you team! Thank you all, for everything… you already know!", she expressed.
The series has eight episodes, in which it narrates the story of Bruno and Álex, a film fanatic architect and a fitness-passionate bartender, respectively. Both seek to meet people casually in Barcelona, Spain, although, in reality, what they want is to find love.
The romantic comedy is an adaptation of the homonymous theatrical work by Guillem Clua, winner of the National Prize for Literature of Spain, and is directed by Marta Pahissa and David M. Porras.
María Isabel is not the only Cuban succeeding on streaming platforms, as actress Jacqueline Arenal also had great success on Netflix with the suspense series Pálpito, with which she even renewed for a second season.
In turn, the daughter of comedian and writer Alexis Valdés, América Valdés, made her acting debut this year, with the premiere of the Mexican series El Galán, on the Star+ platform.
Even Díaz Lago herself had previously succeeded on the Netflix giant, with the Spanish series Vis a Vis, a suspenseful prison drama where the 58-year-old actress played the prominent 'Sole'.
With this character, one of the main inmates of the prison, the Cuban actress earned the recognition of the television audience and the Spanish acting community.
Díaz Lago is Cuban by birth, although she has lived in Spain since 1996, a country where she has built a successful career. After participating alongside Penélope Cruz in the film Volver, she has been considered one of the 'Almodóvar Girls', as the actresses who have worked under the direction of the renowned Spanish filmmaker, Pedro Almodóvar, are called.
