Cuban-American Representative María Elvira Salazar (FL-27), Chairwoman of the House Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, led a key hearing on April 16, 2026 titled "Latin America After the Fall of Maduro," examining the outlook for Cuba and the broader region amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
During the session, Salazar engaged in a notable exchange with Democratic Representative Jonathan Jackson, who had visited Cuba from April 1 to 6. In her remarks, the congresswoman highlighted the economic role of the Cuban exile community, noting that it sends approximately eight billion dollars annually to families on the island. She also questioned U.S. foreign policy toward Cuba and pressed the State Department on a Russian oil tanker that delivered more than 700,000 barrels of crude to the island. "After the fall of Maduro, the Western Hemisphere changed. For the first time in decades, regimes that depended on repression and external support are being tested, and nowhere is that more evident than in Cuba," Salazar said.
The hearing featured testimony from Michael Kozak, Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, who addressed the implications for U.S. policy across the region. The exchange between Salazar and Jackson was widely shared by outlets including Univision and across social media, reflecting the ongoing debate in Washington over Cuba policy and the role of the Cuban exile community.
