Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara Arrives in Miami After Release From Cuban Prison

Cuban artist and activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, founder and leading figure of the San Isidro Movement, arrived on the afternoon of Saturday, July 18, 2026, at Miami International Airport aboard an American Airlines flight from Havana, after completing a five-year prison sentence and being authorized to leave Cuba under a U.S. humanitarian parole, according to CNN, The Associated Press, and Diario Las Américas.

Otero Alcántara, 38, was greeted at the airport by family members, representatives of the Cuban exile community, opposition leaders, human rights advocates, and numerous journalists. The artist appeared wrapped in the Cuban flag and made the "L" for liberty gesture as he stepped off the plane.

The performance artist was arrested on July 11, 2021, during Cuba's historic popular protests and was sentenced in June 2022 to five years in prison on charges of contempt, insult to national symbols, and public disorder, which he served at the maximum-security Guanajay prison in Artemisa province. Amnesty International recognizes him as a prisoner of conscience, and in 2025 he received the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent.

Days before his release, on July 7, 2026, Otero Alcántara had been removed from Guanajay prison amid a security operation that left his whereabouts unknown for several days while his U.S. humanitarian parole was being processed.

According to Diario Las Américas, among his first activities on U.S. soil, the artist planned to attend a Mass at the Ermita de la Caridad del Cobre shrine in Miami. Otero Alcántara has said he intends to resume his creative projects and continue advocating for freedom of expression in Cuba from exile.
