With his second-best mark of the year, 2.26 meters (m), Cuban high jumper Luis Enrique Zayas, champion of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, won today the athletics meet in Trinec, in the Czech Republic.
Zayas, ruler of the under 20 world in Poland 2016, claimed first place in the high jump in that silver category event of the World Athletics Indoor Tour, in what was his third appearance in the current indoor winter tour.
Behind the Cuban athlete were Mexican Edgar Rivero and Belgian Thomas Carmoy, both with 2.23 m, as holders of second and third place, respectively.
With that performance, the island's representative fell just one centimeter short of his most outstanding mark of the present season (2.27 m), achieved this Saturday also in Czech territory, where he finished fifth in the Hustopece event.
There the Santiago native had the same result as four other competitors, although due to the fouls he committed he ended up in fifth position.
Hamish Kerr (2.30 m), from New Zealand, dominated that championship ahead of Rivera and his teammate Erick Portillo, both with 2.27 m, just like the Cuban, plus Australian Brandon Starc and Carmoy, placed in fourth and sixth place, in that order, according to the official World Athletics website.
Previously, on January 31, Zayas shared second place with two other jumpers at the Nehvizdy meet, also in the Czech Republic, where he achieved a mark of 2.22 m in his debut this year.
The Cuban high jumper has as his best personal indoor mark 2.33 m, obtained in Slovakia three years ago.
