Grand Master Leinier Domínguez advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIDE World Championship Bakú 2023 after defeating Serbian Alexey Sarana in the round of 16. A victory and a draw against Sarana allowed Leinier to place himself among the eight best chess players in the world.
With the black pieces and after 36 moves of an English Opening, the "Idol of Güines" certified his excellent performance at the World Championship, in which he has accumulated five wins and seven draws so far.
With this result, never before achieved by the Cuban-American, Leinier extended his positive streak without suffering defeats in what has been the tournament so far and his next opponent will be his teammate on the United States team, Fabiano Caruana.
Leinier Domínguez defeated Serbian Alexey Sarana this Saturday in the first game of the fifth round of the Bakú 2023 World Chess Championship.
At the end of the match, Leinier Domínguez stated that "in general, it's difficult to expect something here. You have to try to play as best as possible and put pressure, especially with white, and see what happens." For Leinier's rival, this meant the first loss after having managed to advance to the round of 16.
