Lázaro Montes Hits Third MLB Home Run, Reaches 40 for the Season

Cuban rookie Lázaro Montes hit his third career MLB home run on the night of Friday, September 11, 2026, a pinch-hit, two-run shot in the sixth inning against the Oakland Athletics that tied the game at 4-4. The Seattle Mariners went on to lose 6-5 in ten innings on a walk-off home run by Donovan Walton.

Montes' home run traveled 430 feet. With that blast, the 21-year-old outfielder reached 40 combined home runs for the 2026 season: 37 hit in the minor leagues, between Double-A and Triple-A, before his early-September call-up, plus the three he has now hit with the Mariners.

The Havana native made his major league debut on September 2 with a 407-foot home run against the Boston Red Sox, and on September 8 hit the longest home run ever tracked at Seattle's T-Mobile Park, a 474-foot blast. Signed by the Mariners as an international free agent in January 2022 for a $2.5 million bonus, Montes was named the Northwest League's Most Valuable Player in 2025 with Double-A Arkansas and arrived in the majors ranked as the organization's No. 5 prospect.
