Cuban Lázaro Martínez needed just two attempts to claim first place in the triple jump event at the Val-de-Reuil Indoor Athletics Meet in France.

The Guantanamo native stretched to 16.84 meters with his opening jump, which would have been enough to dominate the competition. Nevertheless, he took advantage of the second round to reach 17.03, the jump with which he closed his participation in the silver category event at the World Athletics Indoor Tour 2025.

Beyond the victory, the mark guaranteed him second place in the universal ranking for the current indoor season, behind Jamaican Jordan Scott, who registered a jump of 17.11 meters when the year was just beginning.

Behind the Cuban were host Thomas Gogois (16.69), bronze medalist at the 2024 European championships, and four-time Turkish champion Can Ozupek (16.37).

Martínez, eighth at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and world runner-up in Budapest 2023, ranks among the main figures from the Island heading into the next world indoor championship, which will be held in the Chinese city of Nanjing, between March 21 and 23.

The student of the once stellar Yoelbi Quesada, who has a personal indoor best of 17.64 meters achieved in March 2022, will return to action on February 8, during the Metz Athletic Meet, also on French soil.

Two days before that is scheduled the debut in the winter season of high jumper Luis Enrique Zayas, who will be one of the main attractions at the Udine Meet in Italy.
