One of the strongest candidates from the Cuban delegation to win a title at the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games (July 23 to August 8, 2021) is long jumper Juan Miguel Echevarría. Stable in the world elite for quite some time now, today he added another international title to his record.
At the Castellón Meeting, Memorial José Antonio Cansino, in Spain, the native of Camagüey stretched to 8.38 meters on his third attempt and that was enough for him to triumph, as he had no other valid jumps during the day. The bronze medalist at the 2019 Doha World Championships broke the meet record of 8.08 meters, set on July 4, 2017 by Brazilian Tiago da Silva.
In this event, athletes from Spain, Colombia, Cuba, Norway, and Germany participated, and the podium was completed by German Maximilian Entholzner (8.12 meters on his sixth and final attempt) and Ghanaian-born Spanish national Jean Marie Okutu (7.96 meters on his final jump).
