José Pito Abreu Visits Cuba Amid Doubts About His MLB Future

The stellar former Houston Astros player in Major League Baseball (MLB) José "Pito" Abreu traveled to Cuba on vacation, amid doubts about his future in the Major Leagues after being released this season by the galactic team.

According to sports reporter Yasel Porto, on his Facebook profile, the Cuban major league player entered the island through Santa Clara Airport, close to his native Cienfuegos.

"The legendary Cuban baseball player José Dariel Abreu has been in his native land these days to visit his family and friends," he wrote.

Porto added that Abreu "has been in Cienfuegos several times since he emigrated from Cuba and this year he has decided to spend some time in the summer in the middle of a very difficult season for him in which he lost his position with the Houston Astros".

"Abreu's photo was sent to this journalist by my personal friend Humberto, who took it with the stellar baseball player at Santa Clara airport," he concluded.

In mid-June of this year, the Houston Astros management released Cuban baseball player José "Pito" Abreu from their roster, who served in the lineup as first base for the "galactic" team.

"The Astros have released veteran 1B José Abreu today. To fill Abreu's spot on the roster, Houston selected IF/OF Cooper Hummel from Triple A Sugar Land," they detailed on the Texas team's X network.

"Thank you for everything José. We wish you the best of luck!", they added.

Regarding this, baseball specialist Francys Romero opined that with Abreu's veteran status, at 37 years old, and his current weak offensive performance, it would be difficult to find a team at this point in the tournament.

Abreu said goodbye to the Astros forever, with a season to forget, with a record of .124 batting average, two home runs and just seven runs batted in.

The Cuban batter, after nine years with the Chicago White Sox in Major League Baseball (MLB), had signed in 2023 for three seasons with the Houston Astros.
