José Luis Toledo Santander, National Prize in Law

The National Union of Jurists of Cuba (unjc) awarded the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes National Prize in Law 2023 to Doctor of Sciences José Luis Toledo Santander, a recognized jurist who has dedicated his life to the development of legal sciences in the nation.

With the purpose of recognizing his outstanding professional trajectory, the jury voted unanimously in favor of Santander, whom they recognize as a founding member of the unjc and a member of several of its scientific societies, and as deserving of recognition for the responsibilities and tasks carried out in his distinguished work in the practice and development of Law in Cuba.

The National Executive Board of the professional organization noted, in a press release, that the recognized jurist traced a long path as head of the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic in the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila and La Habana, until holding the position of Vice Attorney General of the Republic.

The also Master's in Public Law and specialist in Criminal Sciences, was full professor and dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of La Habana, from which he directed important teaching and scientific processes in the world of law.

As a representative of the National Assembly of People's Power for the municipality of Plaza de la Revolución, in La Habana, he served on the commissions of National Defense and Constitutional and Legal Affairs, and is currently President of the latter.

He is part of the drafting commissions of important laws of the country, such as the constitutional reform of 2002, the drafting of the current Constitution of the Republic in 2019, and the Family Code, as well as all constitutional development laws approved since the enactment of the current Charter.

The formal and public presentation of the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes National Prize in Law 2023 will take place on February 27, in the Main Hall of the University of La Habana.
