José Canseco continues insisting on combat sports, after having gained relevance in the Major Leagues where he was known for his tremendous home runs. These days he received a knockout at the Rough N' Rowdy 13 event, against rival Billy Football.
The fight took place on Friday in West Virginia, at the sound of the bell both boxers came out to exchange blows. It was Billy Football who had the better of it by landing a blow that moved Canseco.
This is the Cuban's latest attempt to make a name for himself in Mixed Martial Arts, after retiring as an active player, leaving behind a trail of 462 home runs, 1,407 RBIs, two World Series titles and a Most Valuable Player award over more than a decade and seven teams.
After finishing his career, Canseco unleashed a storm that shook the foundations of baseball with his book about steroid use in the Major Leagues and tried to seek other paths such as combat sports, where things have not gone well for him.
His MMA debut took place at the Dream 8 event against Hong Man Choi, who would send Canseco to the canvas before destroying him with a ground and pound that forced the referee to stop the action just over a minute into the first round.
At 56 years old and after this defeat, it does not seem possible that the Havana native raised in Miami wants to continue trying his luck in combat sports that, frankly, were never his thing.
