Despite not producing the same quantity of home runs and runs as in previous years, Cuban José Abreu is one of the finalists for the Silver Bat award in the American League this season. NBC Sports Chicago made this known this Thursday, October 27.

The Chicago White Sox first baseman has won this award three times in his career. In 2014 (.317/.383/.581/.964 with 36 HR and 107 RBIs), in 2018 (.265/.325/.473/.798 with 22 HR and 78 RBIs) and the 60-game season due to the pandemic in 2020 (.317/.370/.617/.987 with 19 HR and 60 RBIs).

This season Pito had an offensive line of .304/.378/.446/.824 with 40 doubles, 15 home runs and 75 runs batted in. In the American League he was second in hits (183), fifth in batting average and OBP, sixth in doubles, seventh in at-bats (601) and eighth in walks (12).

Among the first basemen of his league "Mal Tiempo" ranks first in hits, OBP and doubles (in this last category tied with Yuli Gurriel), is second in batting average and OPS, third in runs scored (85), fourth in SLG, sixth in runs batted in and eighth in home runs.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays), Nathaniel Lowe (Texas Rangers) and Anthony Rizzo (New York Yankees) are the other candidates for the Silver Bat award in the American League. The Dominican (born in Canada) who was the winner of this award in 2021 averaged .274 this year with 32 HR and 97 RBIs, Lowe batted .302 with 27 HR and 76 RBIs, while Rizzo did so for .224 with 32 HR and 75 RBIs.

Abreu will be a free agent this offseason and everything seems to indicate that he will no longer wear the White Sox uniform. In any case, the team that acquires his services will be very fortunate. Pito has shown that at 36 years old he is still a formidable hitter. Will he win his fourth Silver Bat? For now he is one of the finalists, so he continues to be among the elite first basemen in MLB.
