From next Wednesday the 10th (the poet's birthday) until Tuesday the 16th (his death) the Nicolás Guillén Foundation will hold a day of remembrance and tribute to Cuba's National Poet in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of his death in Havana.
Supported by the Ministry of Culture and other institutions, the tribute day for the distinguished intellectual, founder of UNEAC and its president until the end of his days, will take place in the morning of this Wednesday, at the foot of a statue of the poet, created by Enrique Angulo, which has been placed, not by chance, in the Alameda de Paula.
Honoring his love for Havana and the itinerary so often traversed by Guillén, the sculpture has been placed in that location, where Doctor Eusebio Leal will be heard delivering the opening remarks, explained Nicolás Hernández Guillén, president of the Foundation, at a press conference.
Products of Sensemayá Editions, the Foundation's publishing house, the titles "Cantos para soldados y sones para turistas"; "De qué callada manera"; "Poemas de amor"; "El son entero" and "La paloma de vuelo popular" (all from the Palma Sola Collection) will be on sale on Mercaderes Street, also called Poetry Street, where there will be a poetry reading on the 10th itself at four in the afternoon. Saturday of the Book and the Book of the Month space join the tribute with the respective presentations of "Sóngoro cosongo", "Motivos de son" and "La paloma de vuelo popular".
On the 11th, at the Dulce María Loinaz Center, the space People and Places of Havana, presented by Ciro Bianchi, will also honor his work with the presence of poet Nancy Morejón, a scholar of Guillén, and the Colloquium Culture and Revolution, which will take place at Uneac on the 15th, led by Jamaican Keith Ellis, will have as guests Abel Prieto, Nancy Morejón and Luis Álvarez.
Curated by Lesbia Vent Dumois, the exhibition "Iba yo por un camino", which will be inaugurated on Monday the 15th at the Villa Manuela gallery, will be another of the contributions to the day which includes, for the 16th, a pilgrimage to Colón Cemetery.
