The Ministry of Culture of Cuba (Mincult) has organized a tribute program on the occasion of the centennial of the birth of writer Eliseo Diego, to be celebrated on July 2.

By that date Cuban cultural institutions will develop actions related to the life and work of the 1986 National Literature Prize winner.

The José Martí National Library (BNJM), the Cuban Book Institute, the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists, the Hermanos Saíz Association, and the Dulce María Loynaz Cultural Center, are among the institutions promoting the tribute.

According to Mincult, the celebration of the date consists mainly of the publication of Diego's works, documents and photos on social networks.

The BNJM will publish a dossier and the cultural magazine La Jiribilla will dedicate its issue next week to the notable Cuban intellectual, and on July 2 itself a plaque will be placed at his birthplace, in this capital.

On the anniversary day an event will take place at BNJM in which poets, actors, scholars of Diego's work and troubadours will participate, audiovisuals will be shown and a bibliographic exhibition will be inaugurated.

Also the Cubapoesía project calls for a poetry rally to which intellectuals from various points around the world confirmed their participation.

Similarly, outside of Cuba, the winner of the 1993 Juan Rulfo Literature Prize will be remembered, an initiative that is highlighted by the one organized by the University of La Sapienza, in Rome, Italy.

Diego is considered one of the most important figures in Cuban literature, especially in poetry, a field to which his book En la calzada de Jesús del Monte belongs, although he also successfully cultivated essay and prose.
