Jorge Perugorría Will Receive Lucía de Honor Award at Gibara Film Festival

The International Film Festival of Gibara, to be held between August 1 and 5, will present the Lucía de Honor award to well-known actor Jorge Perugorría.

At a press conference in that city in Holguín, it was highlighted that Perugorría is a "key figure in the relaunching and revitalization of the Festival," significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The actor, who led the event between 2016 and 2022, will now become the Honorary President of the Festival.

Sergio Benvenuto Solás, nephew of filmmaker and creator of the event Humberto Solás, continues as director of the Gibara Festival.



Perugorría began directing last May the International Film and Environment Festival of the Caribbean Isla Verde, which took place in the special municipality Isla de la Juventud, the second largest in area of the Cuban archipelago and located to the southwest, about 174 kilometers from Havana.

The filmmaker and visual artist, who began consolidating his film career with the character of the homosexual intellectual Diego in the film Strawberry and Chocolate (1993), aims with this initiative to make visible the environmental challenges facing the Caribbean.

This first edition of the Festival was not competitive, but did award honorary prizes to Mexican film director Eleonora Isunza and to world record-holding freediver, Cuban Deborah Andollo.

Gibara Film Festival 2023

Following the cancellation in 2022 of the 16th edition due to a major fire at the Matanzas Supertanker Base, the festival returns this year with its customary schedule.

The programming will be similar to last year's event, although it incorporates technological cinema in the Plaza de la Cultura at night for all ages, according to Radio Angulo.

Only in Gibara

Josué García, producer of the event, announced at a press conference that the opening of the event will be hosted by the group Toques del Río. Meanwhile, musicians Jotabarrioz and Luis Alberto Barbería will pay tribute to the Nueva Trova movement.

Similarly, Fígaro Jazz Club will be in charge of jazz jam sessions, along with musicians of that genre, and for the first time Gibara will feature a performance by Colmenita, primarily in the communities.

In two evening sessions, films that are part of the official selection will be screened thanks to a giant screen provided by the Havana Film Festival and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
