Cuban actor and director Jorge Perugorría received the 2024 National Film Award for his national and international work, recognized throughout his career, and for being a defender of Cuban culture.
As president of the jury, writer, poet, narrator, researcher and ethnologist Miguel Barnet delivered words of praise, among which he highlighted the filmmaker's multiple accolades across all latitudes.
Perugorría stands out for his concern and contribution to our identity, in addition to being an undeniable protector of the culture of this island and one of the most visible faces of his generation, while he has set a standard in the interpretation of the most diverse characters he faces to this day, Barnet expressed.
His strong determination to promote and develop national cinematography has tangible evidence in his great efforts to maintain the Gibara Film Festival, which is already an established space, and more recently bringing to the Isle of Youth the Festival Isla Verde, he noted.
The Cuban intellectual stated that Perugorría is a multifaceted artist and embodies the deepest values of national identity.
For his part, the honoree dedicated the award to his family, to all his colleagues, including Mirta Ibarra, Adela Legrá, Isabel Santos, Luis Alberto García and many others with consecrated work, as well as to directors and technicians.
To many people who have important work and contributions to Cuban cinema, said the actor, painter and environmentalist, who with his drive and dedication to the Festival Isla Verde also contributes to the community environment.
Perugorría concluded his remarks by dedicating the award and special affection to his wife, for accompanying him in his acting, in his path in painting and in all his projects.
At the ceremony, the Alejo Carpentier medal was also presented to outstanding workers in the sector and filmmakers for their relevant merits and contributions to Cuban culture.
Also granted, on this 65th anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, the commemorative seal 65 years of Icaic to those who, from different areas, have dedicated so far part of their lives to the seventh art.
