Holguín Celebrates Painter and Poet Jorge Hidalgo Pimentel's 85th Birthday With New Solo Exhibition

Holguín's Provincial Center for Plastic Arts opened the solo exhibition «Palimpsestos, Orikis, Odunes, Mitomorfos» on September 11, 2026, honoring painter, poet and essayist Jorge Hidalgo Pimentel on his 85th birthday. The show brings together 131 mixed-media works on canvas and cardboard, made with inks and acrylics, all created between 2024 and 2026.

Born in Santiago de Cuba and based in Holguín for decades, Hidalgo has built a career spanning more than 60 years as a painter, draftsman, xylographer, designer, poet and journalist. He founded the Romerías de Mayo festival and the Ibero-American Culture Festival, and established the Holguín chapter of Cuba's Union of Writers and Artists. His honors include the Order for National Culture, the Hacha de Holguín award and the title of Master of Masters.

"At this stage of life I can confess that I have lived, looked, felt and loved, and all of this is reflected in the breadth and depth of this collection," the artist said. Curator Yuricel Moreno described the show as offering "a valuable contribution for the public to interact with a wide creative universe of profound spiritual significance," blending contemporary experimentation with the study of Mesoamerican and Caribbean indigenous cultures and Afro-Cuban religious-magical systems.
